Neck and Back Pain

Neck and Back Pain Facts

  • A study by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) revealed that neck and low back pain cost the United states over $87 billion between 1996-2013.  Neck and back pain ranked 3rd just behind diabetes and heart disease.

  • About 80% of adults will experience neck or back pain during their lifetime

  • The majority of acute low back pain is mechanical, meaning there is an issue with proper movement of the spine and supporting musculature.

  • An individual with chronic low back pain misses an estimated seven days of work annually.

  • The vast majority of adults without back pain have bulging discs, degenerative changes, arthritis

Why should you get help?

  • Often episodes of acute mechanical lower back pain can and will resolve on their own.  Seeking treatment, however, can uncover other issues or rule out more severe pathology.  Early diagnosis and treatment if necessary has also been shown to speed recovery, lower costs, and decrease the impact on the patients life.

  • Chronic low back and neck pain is not as simple.  Often the approach for treatment is multifaceted including ruling in/out stress, dietary issues, exercise, depression, etc. in conjunction with physical therapy.

How can neck and back pain be treated?

  • There are many treatment approaches for neck and back pain ranging from medication, injections, physical therapy and chiropractic care. Generally our patients are referred to us by a treating physician and we will work closely with them to accomplish your goals.

  • We will perform thorough evaluation looking at spinal alignment, range of motion, strength as well as functional screening to determine the root cause of your pain.  Upon completion of the evaluation we'll develop a treatment plan directly with you and centered around your goals and expectations.  Following sessions will focus on decreasing pain while simultaneously increasing your functional mobility.

  • Occasionally a referral for imaging or other treatment approach is required and we will help facilitate that for you.
